The Psalms: A School of Prayer
Sundays January 12th, 19th, 26th, and February 2nd at 9am in the Library.
The 150 songs that form the Book of Psalms (or the Psalter) have sometimes been called a “school of prayer” as they provide a model for how we can take our deep joy and longing—not to mention our anger and resentment—into our relationship with God.
The Psalms have long formed a central part in the worship of God’s people. They had a key part of the daily pattern of worship in the Temple and have always been an integral part of Christian worship. Indeed, as we read from the Psalter at almost every service they are probably the most read section of the Bible. And yet, we seldom actually stop to give the Psalms the attention they deserve.
This four-week adult forum series will help us to become better readers and prayers of the Psalms. We’ll look at the structure of the Psalter as whole before focusing on examples of the different genres of psalm (e.g. songs of lament and songs of praise). Led by the Rev. Thomas Clement.
